A manicure and pedicure, a perfect hairstyle, and a sparkle in our pets’ eyes… This is how our beloved furry friends look when we take proper care of them.
Small and large dogs, with pedigree or not, show dogs or charming mixed breeds: they all deserve proper care, which includes not only brushing, bathing, or trimming their hair but also trimming nails, cleaning their eyes, and ears. Such a grooming ritual, whether at a salon or in our home, is the foundation for maintaining the health, well-being, and appearance of our most cherished canine friend.
Ears Up!
Just as we take care of our own hygiene, we must also care for our pets’ ears.
After all, their hearing is much more sensitive, and their ears often have unusual shapes, different sizes, and complex structures.
Additionally, some dogs have an innate tendency for allergies and ear infections. Thus, careful cleaning is not a whim, just as regular checking of their “senses” isn’t: we frequently inspect them, paying attention to possible irritation, inflammation, or the dog’s behavior indicating pain, itching, or other discomforts.
If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, we recommend consulting your veterinarian. Based on our experience, “We clean ears to keep them healthy.” For those who want to perform this task at home, here are some practical tips:
- You’ll need cotton swabs and a dog ear cleaner.
- A treat is helpful to distract them, as cleaning ears isn’t one of a dog’s favorite activities.
- First, open the ear and pour in the liquid.
- Hold the ear and massage the ear canal.
- Blowing around the dog’s ear will encourage them to shake their head.
- Finally, dry the ear with gauze and clean the ear canal with a swab (do not insert it too deeply).
On the Edge of… a Claw
Trimming nails is one of the most stressful procedures for both the dog and us. That’s why we usually take our pets to a professional grooming salon.
The biggest challenges are related to the structure of the dog’s claws, fear, and restless behavior, which applies to practically all four-legged friends.
Dog claws have an innervated and blood-supplied core inside, which can vary in length, sometimes reaching halfway down the claw. This means trimming them requires skill to avoid causing harm.
It’s a bit easier to trim light-colored nails because you can see the pink core through them. For dark nails, experience and caution are essential. Our four-legged clients can count on a calm approach, petting, and efficient handling with excellent tools. For those who want to trim their dog’s nails at home, here are some useful tips:
- Use nail clippers for dogs appropriate to their size. Small dogs have delicate claws, but larger dogs pose a real challenge.
- Keep gauze on hand to stop any bleeding.
- Trim dark nails in small pieces; the closer to the core, the darker the center becomes.
- Calm the pet; dogs deserve reassurance and security.
